Description

Monastic real estate in Inquisition-era Spain

King of Spain from 1556 to 1598; his eventful reign included Spain’s conquest of the Philippines (named for him), the establishment of a colony in Florida, and the historic defeat of the Spanish Armada by the British in 1588. DS, in Spanish, boldly signed “Yo el Rey,” one page, 8.25 x 12.25, September 20, 1566. A meticulously penned communication to the mayor of Cordoba concerning a dispute over property rights for two manor houses and country estates claimed by the monastery of St. Jerome. Countersigned “by His Majesty’s order, Pedro de Hoyo.” In very good condition, with light scattered toning and spotting, a few small ink erosion holes (mainly to blank portion), and pinholes at intersections of folds, the faults scarcely affecting the appearance, and the document presenting quite nicely, indeed. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
