Lawyer and statesman (1721–1793) who earned a special niche in history as the only person to sign four of the central documents of American sovereignty: the Continental Association of 1774, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. ADS [from a larger document], one page, 7.5 x 4, February 21, 1759. An arrest warrant, written as Justice of the Peace of New Milford, Connecticut, to the Sheriff of Litchfield County. In part: “In his Majesties name you are hereby Required forthwith to arrest the Bodys for the within named Gamaliel Hurbut & Elijah Benedict … to answer to the within Complaint & to be Dealt with according to Law.” Accompanied by a nineteenth-century portrait engraving. In very good condition, with folds (one through last name of signature; partial separations and a few pinholes, tape-reinforced from the reverse) and scattered light toning and soiling.
