Interesting 8.25 x 5.75 cardstock photo of a scene on the Ogooue River in Gabon, signed and inscribed in fountain pen (in French) to Madame Josselin de Jong and dated Lamberene, October 26, 1960. Schweitzer has also added a lengthy inscription in German. In full (translated): “The three islands in the Ogooue by the village of Igendja, 80 km downstream from Lambarene, the sight of which on a September day in 1915 revealed to me that the idea of reverence for life is the basic principle of all ethics and true humanity.” He continues on the reverse: “The islands are covered with jungle and vines. No human has ever set foot on them. The waters flowing between them cannot be seen on the picture,” and signs again with his initials.
