Description

1961 World Champion Yankees team photo signed by thirty-three, including “M&M Boys” Mantle and Maris, Berra, Kubek, Howard, Ford, and others

Vintage glossy 13.5 x 9 team photo of the 1961 World Champion New York Yankees, signed in black ink by thirty-three team members. The signers include: Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Tony Kubek, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Clete Boyer, Earl Torgeson, Wally Moses, John Sain, Ralph Houk, Frank Crosetti, Jim Hegan, Hal Reniff, Bill Skowron, Billy Gardner, Bob Hale, Joe DeMaestri, Tex Clevenger, Ralph Terry, Hector Lopez, Jack Reed, Elston Howard, Bob Turley, Bud Daley, Spud Murray, Jim Coates, Rollie Sheldon, Bill Stafford, John Blanchard, Luis Arroyo, Al Downing, and Bobby Richardson. An inscription in an unknown hand, “To Billy, Best wishes,” has been added in the top left corner. Beautifully suede matted and framed with a small plaque to an overall size of 22 x 16.5. Although best remembered for Roger Maris’ and Mickey Mantle’s pursuit of Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record, the 1961 season also boasted one of the greatest teams in baseball history: the same Yankees for whom Maris and Mantle played. The “M & M Boys” hit 115 of the Yanks’ then-record 240 home runs, while Cy Young Award winner Whitey Ford and major-league saves leader Luis Arroyo were the stars of a fine pitching staff. After spending virtually the entire first half of the season in second place, the Yankees blasted past Detroit in mid-season and had effectively sealed their second consecutive AL pennant by Labor Day. They finished the season eight games ahead of the 101–61 Tigers and had little trouble overcoming the Cincinnati Reds in a five-game World Series for the nineteenth World Championship in franchise history. In very good condition, with adhesion difficulty to all signatures (varying in degree from a few shades light to difficult to read, the majority being towards the former), a 1.5″ horizontal tear at lower left, and some scattered light creases. While many signed 1961 team balls and partially signed reunion photos are known to exist, vintage photos of this size and of such completeness are so rare that even diehard Red Sox fans will take notice—for some consider the 1961 Yankees to be the greatest team ever assembled. COA Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
