Description

SAFE PASSAGE FOR THE JANET: 1784 Ship’s registry boldly signed by HANCOCK

Partially printed DS, one page, 12.5 x 16, October 20, 1784. Hancock, as Governor of Massachusetts, signs a ship’s registry for the sloop Janet, built in Wolwich, “mastered” by Ephraim Delano and owned by Delano and David Gilmor. Countersigned by Delano, Gilmor, secretary John Avery, Jr., and naval officer David Trufant. The two paper seals remain intact in the left margin. In very good condition, with folds (separations, holes, and small losses stabilized by professional silking to entire reverse), and scattered soiling and toning, Hancock’s signature remaining bold, clear, and completely unaffected. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
