Tennyson forwards mysterious envelopes “to ascertain how this came about.”

English poet. The most famous poet of the Victorian age, he was a profound spokesman for the ideas and values of his times. ALS signed “A. Tennyson,” two pages, 3.5 x 4.5, April 7, 1872. Letter to Shakers & Co. In part, “I forward you two envelopes which arrived this morning; & I send them as I received them, one inserted within the other, & both torn open. As far as I know the contents, which were of no importance were not abstracted. I wish you for the credit of your own firm (for you perceive that both letters are redirected to you to ascertain how this came about.” In fine condition, with mounting remnants to reverse of second page.
