ANS signed “Henry W. Longfellow,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.25, February 6, 1861. ANS written at the conclusion of a pre-printed form letter from Charles Sumner concerning postal theft, which reads, in part, “As there is too much reason to fear that valuable books are often stolen from the Post Office, I should be glad to know if those addressed to you come to hand.” Longfellow signs at the bottom of the pre-printed letters and writes in his note, “ I have only 3 vols. of the “Japan Expedition.” How many vols. of the “Coast Survey” are printed? They are very valuable. Have you any extra ones or odd one encumbering your shelves?” Longfellow also writes at the top of the page, “Vol. XI of this work never reached me.” In fine condition, with a small tear to top right corner, vertical fold through a single letter of signature and light show-through from text on reverse.
