Grant check drawn from an eventual failed railroad financier less than a year after the end of the Civil War

Business check, drawn on the Jay Cooke & Co. Banker’s account, 7.25 x 3, filled out in another hand and signed by Grant, payable to W. B. Moses for $364.00, January 23, 1866. Cooke's firm had been the government's chief financier of the Union military effort during the Civil War. The firm then became a federal agent in the government financing of railroad construction. So when the firm, heavily invested in railroad construction, closed its doors on September 18, 1873, a major economic panic swept the nation. Usual cancellation cuts, revenue stamp to top left corner, small tape repair and mounting remnants to reverse and several bank stamps, otherwise fine condition.
