Description

Sending patriotic Christmas greetings in the midst of World War II: “America has produced a generation of fighting men unequalled in our history”

America’s top World War I ace (1890–1973), with twenty-six victories. TLS signed “Eddie,” two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, “Christmas 1943.” Rickenbacker writes to Larry E. Williams in Chevy Chase, Maryland. In part: “Few men have had the privilege and honor, if any, to have visited all the fighting fronts throughout the world, including Russia, as I have during the past year and few months. This opportunity has crystallized one basic thought in my mind above all others—that America has produced a generation of fighting men unequalled in our history who are scattered to the four corners of the world. Fighting men whose deeds, in my opinion, make possible a total victory over the cruel and heartless enemy in Europe during the year of 1944…. Let us play our part to the utmost to preserve the type of America they are fighting for and the way of life we are enjoying, for them, when they return after victory comes….To them must go the torch of leadership for the service rendered so that generations to come may proudly say ‘Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men.’” In fine, clean condition, with filing holes and staple to top edge, and bend to one corner.
