Original handwritten notes from a speech delivered by McCarthy to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco in May 1972, three pages, 14 x 8.5, signed on the first page in blue felt tip, “Eugene McCarthy.” Among the references that appear in the notes are “Mystique—Camelot,” “Nixon one of big worriers,” “Promise new leadership initiative,” “Ideology of Cold War,” and a list titled “Unconstitutional/Unchecked,” which includes the entries “CIA & Special Forces,” “U-2,” “Cuba,” and “Cambodia.” The consignor notes that he obtained the notes directly from McCarthy at the event.
