Hear ye: Letter from the man who first read the Declaration of Independence in public

Nixon (1733–1808), an officer in the Revolutionary War, gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776. ALS, one page, 4.75 x 7, May 8, 1782. Nixon writes to a lawyer named Nichols. In full: “If you cannot obtain an order from Counsil, you could oblige me by sending a Certificate or some Official Paper showing that the Amount is approved & passed.” In very good condition, with usual folds, mild toning and soiling, seal-related loss to blank lower portion of sheet, and light show-through from notations on reverse.
