Ineffectual king of France from 1715 to 1774 who was dominated by his strong-willed and unscrupulous mistress, Madame de Pompadour. Advised of the growing discontent among his people, Louis prophetically observed “Après moi le déluge”—After me the flood—an apt prediction of the impending French Revolution. DS, signed “Louis,” one page on vellum, 18.5 x 11.5, March 1, 1744. A document appointing Captain Bernitez Colonel of the Second Regiment. In very good condition, with folds, a few tiny holes, scattered soiling, toning, and spotting (none affecting signature), and a 5” cut at lower right, well away from any text.
