Well-regarded British artist (1759–1838) who attained an extra measure of notoriety for a purported extramarital affair with Thomas Jefferson; their relationship was dramatized in the 1995 film Jefferson in Paris. First-person ALS signed in the text, “Mrs. Cosway,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, November 9 [no year]. In part: “Mrs. Cosway’s compliments to Mrs. Perregaux & has written to Mr. Hammersley on the subject. She now incloses a note to him & one to Mr. Conway & hopes every thing will be settled. If he has not had the 20£ returned it is his fault for not having settled the account at the time she took it…. She always has been accustomed to draw on Mr. C. with confidence & never know any difficulties from him.” Matted and framed with a reproduction engraving to an overall size of 14 x 11.
