Chestnuts, oaks, and “hiccories,” but no cherry tree: Surveying document in the hand of the young George Washington

Unsigned, boldly penned manuscript document in Washington’s hand, consisting of approximately ninety words on a 9 x 3.5 segment clipped from a survey, no date. The document reads, in part: “No. 48 Et. 36 poles to three chestnut oaks and a black oak, thence No. 78 Et. 120 poles to two chestnut oaks an[d] hiccory & gum, thence No. 35 Et. 60 poles to a black oak chestnut and chestnut oak by a large rock, thence No. 10 Et. 20 poles to an [sic] hiccory chestnut & black oak corner to the lands of John Acton, thence with a line of the same No. 5 1/2 Wt. 196 poles to four hiccories and two red oaks by a path, thence … line to the begining [sic] within which….” The document has been expertly tissue-reinforced on the reverse. In very good, bright, visually appealing condition, with irregular edges (slightly affecting a few words at top and right edges) and a few small thin spots and holes to blank portions which have been stabilized by reinforcement.
