The fifty-one-year-old Captain Ernst Lehman, former Commander of the Hindenburg, was a company observer in the control car on the airship’s ill-fated final voyage that ended in a fiery explosion at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. Led away from the wreckage muttering, “I can’t understand it,” Lehman died of his injuries the next day. It was said that his final words aboard the airship were, “It’s lightning, jump!,” giving rise to a number of theories regarding the mystery of the Hindenburg’s demise. Elusive vintage pearl-finish 4.5 x 6.5 photo of the uniformed Lehmann smoking a pipe, boldly signed in fountain pen. Accompanied by several unsigned pages of photos and historical information. In fine condition, with a hint of wear to corners. R&R COA.
