Description

Thurber not yet ready for blue? “In one of the essays Gorer mentions ‘Sexually exploited, ‘screwed.’ I have been wondering about this one ever since.”

Cartoonist and writer known for his humorous drawings and short stories including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, June 1, 1949. Thurber thanks a writer for an article concerning his works and updates him on his next book. In part, “I was properly and happily overwhelmed by your article and its revelation of your interest in my little shelf of books, as Henry James once called his fifty odd volumes. One of the things that impressed me is the fact that the essay is written by a man who knows the United States and doesn’t guess at things. A month ago I sold the New Yorker a small parody based on the rather misty journalistic sense of Spender, Gorer and Connolly in their essays dealing with the American literary scene. The piece has not been printed yet. In one of the essays Gorer mentions ‘Sexually exploited, ‘screwed.’” I have been wondering about this one ever since, together with the Hollywood publishing offices of Spender and Connolly found in New York.…I have nearly finished a new book of pieces without drawings called ‘Thurber Country,’ and I will send you one suitably inscribed when it comes out this winter or next spring.” In very good condition, with moderate mailing folds, one through a single letter of signature, light mirroring of signature to top, some scattered light soiling and mild wrinkles. R&R COA.
