Description

Three months before the Battle of Yorktown, Governor John Hancock appoints a Massachusetts militia captain

Revolutionary War–dated DS, one page, 11.5 x 12, Commonwealth of Massachusetts letterhead, July 1, 1781. Governor John Hancock appoints “Caleb Swan … Captain of the Fifth Company in the fourth regiment of Militia in the County of Essex, whereof Samuel Johnson, Esq. is Colonel.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink, “John Hancock,” and countersigned by Secretary John Avery. The reverse is endorsed by Colonel Johnson (February 28, 1782), attesting that Swan has taken the oath and appeared before him. In very good condition, with several repaired fold separations on reverse (one through a single letter of Hancock’s big and bold signature), scattered light toning and soiling, intact paper seal, and a few small areas of trivial paper loss. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
