Wife of President Franklin Pierce and First Lady from 1853 to 1857. Unsigned letter in her hand, evidently as First Lady, 4.25 x 7, May 5. A note of thanks on behalf of her husband. In part: “Mr. Pierce wishes to acknowledge at this late period the kind and gratifying attention of Dr. Batters—a little book with a note from himself—& he entrusted a message of thanks to another, which he learns did not reach him and would now convey…. By some mistake Dr. Batters’ card did not reach Mr. Means [?]—which he regretted—as he would have been pleased to see him before his departure to Europe.” In fine condition, with usual mailing folds and penciled collector’s notations. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
