Bank check, 7.5 x 3, filled out and signed by Chester Arthur as “C. A. Arthur,” payable to his wife, Ellen, for $50.00, July 23, 1877. Ellen has endorsed the check on the reverse as “E. L. H. Arthur.” Mrs. Arthur is among the most elusive of First Ladies in autograph material, and her signature, together with that of her husband on the same item, makes for a combination of exceptional scarcity.
