Five days before giving the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln writes to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase regarding the dismissal of San Francisco Mint supervisor Robert J. Stevens, asking he “be permitted to examine, and take extracts, of the evidences upon which he was removed”

ALS as president signed “A. Lincoln,” one page, 5 x 8, Executive Mansion letterhead, November 14, 1863. Letter written to the “Hon. Sec. of the Treasury.” In full, “Mr. Stevens, late Superintendant of the Mint at San Francisco, asks to have a copy, or be permitted to examine, and take extracts, of the evidences upon which he was removed. Please oblige him in one way or the other.” In fine condition, with professional reinforcements to two vertical creases on reverse, lightly affecting a few trivial strokes of text and opening flourish of Lincoln’s signature and some scattered light toning and soiling.
