Description

Spiraling deeper into the depression which would result in her becoming a virtual recluse as First Lady, Jane Pierce writes a family member on her husband’s health

First lady and reclusive wife of Franklin Pierce. ALS signed “Jane M. Pierce,” one page both sides, 5.25 x 5.25, no date. Letter written to Ann, possibly a sister-in-law on the Pierce side of the family. In part, “My husband came last evening, dear Ann. He says that his cough is better he thinks, but still coughs very much, and is much reduced both in health & spirits, for this and other reasons - and how much we may have of the sadness as spirit you know and refer to in yourself dear A - very naturally, & I could sympathize with you, if I could not cheer you, and perhaps even in this way, we could gain a little strength & heart from each other and prompt each other…earnestly to the true source of strength & hope & trust.” Pierce has concluded the letter vertically on the front of the letter. In fine condition, with minor signature contrast due to conclusion over beginning of letter, bisecting folds and a bit of mild toning. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
