Description

Nonagenarian George Bernard Shaw discourages a visit in his inimitable style: “There is nothing to see at the end but an old man in his 93rd year, with nothing to say that you do not know better than he”

TLS signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, November 27, 1948. Shaw writes to F. S. Bentley, Esquire. In part: “Your friends are suggesting that I invite you to visit me. I should be glad to see you; but I cannot conscientiously invite you because this village is virtually inaccessible except by car from door to door; and the lanes are dark and dangerous after four in the afternoon, which is the only free time I have…. In the spring and summer the case is different: the country is pleasant and there is plenty of daylight for the journey…. If you agree, do not trouble to reply: I shall understand.” In fine condition, with usual mailing fold. R&R COA.
