Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies

Atlas To Accompany The Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Capt. Calvin D. Cowles, compiler. Published under the direction of the Secretaries of War, by Maj. George B. Davis, Mr. Leslie J. Perry, Mr. Joseph W. Kirkley. Two volumes; 29 pp [index vol.] plus 35 parts; loose, full-page folding plates enclosed in printed wrappers, in original brown leatherette portfolios with string ties: 18.75 x 15; 82 maps, 2 pl. & 72 [&3] maps, 19 pl. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1891-95. First Edition. Phillips. A List of Geographical Atlases in the Library of Congress. Howes C816. The complete run of 178 plates 135 a,b,c added to part 27 with the War Department Circular announcing their inclusion. Maps in color including: Military Operations in the Field, General Topographical Maps, Military Divisions and Depts., and Miscellaneous maps and plates depicting armaments, weaponry, equipment, uniforms, etc. Considered the premier cartographic work of the post-war years. Taken from authentic contemporary records of both the Union and Confederate sides. This supreme achievement found its impetus with the intense need for accurate maps on both sides during the war which resulted in heightened activity and invention cartographic production techniques. During those four years, thousands of maps of unprecedented quality were produced forming the basis for this masterful compilation. Paper lining on interior of the portfolios cracked and peeling on flaps; wrappers chipped at edges, some separated at spine as usual; index volume with wrappers taped at edges, and a closed tear across one corner. Careful inspection of the maps and plates shows only a very occasional slight crease or miniscule tear to an edge, and part 24 has some damping to top edge of plates mostly at the margins; the whole remaining are just about pristine. Overall, very good indeed and difficult to find complete. From an Evergreen shelf. R&R COA. Oversized.
