Description

Leading lady turned princess: Grace Kelly ALS mentioning Alfred Hitchcock and a palace visit from servicemen wounded in Vietnam

ALS signed “Grace,” two pages both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, Palais de Monaco letterhead, January 8, 1968. A friendly, chatty letter to “Roycie Dear.” In part: “The Hitchcocks called us from Hawaii the other day but we could hardly hear them…. We had a wonderful time with them when we were in California last summer—I loved seeing them again after so long. Am enclosing a picture of our Christmas guests—Rainier invited ten servicemen wounded in Vietnam to come to Monte Carlo for a week—They were so adorable & such great kids that we became so fond of them & so very involved with their lives & problems—It was terrible to have to say good-bye—As you can see Stephanie had a favorite…. We are so excited over my uncle George Kelly’s new success—The show-off was so enthusiastically received in N.Y. & what a thrill for him at the age of 81.” Accompanied by the photo mentioned by Kelly, a group shot of the servicemen (one of whom holds Stephanie in his arms), Grace, and Rainier. The recipient, “Roycie Dear,” may well be actress Jessie Royce Landis, who costarred with Kelly in Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief (1955). In fine condition, with mild toning and a few marginal spots. PSA/DNA COA and R&R COA.
