Statesman, three time presidential candidate, known as “the Great Compromiser,” for his support of the Union prior to the Civil War. ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 4.25 x 7.25, October 1851, Ashland. In full: “According to your request, I sent a recommendation of you to the Secy. of the Navy for a Midshipman’s Warrant and I wish you may be appointed. But there are only a certain number of midshipmen allotted to each state, and when I lately inquired into the matter our state had exhausted its quota in two Congressional Districts of which yours unfortunately was not one.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
