Description

Bread and birds: Amusing illustrated letter by Frederick S. Church

ALS signed “F. S. Church,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, November 1 [no year]. The artist sends belated thanks to Mrs. [Dudley] Tenney. In full: “I dreamed last night that my flamingo caught me up in his Bill and gave me a shaking and a spanking because he said I had not written you about that last loaf of Oatmeal bread you sent out.” After signing, he adds a postscript: “Don’t forget me in the next baking.” On the first page, Church added a humorous “literal” illustration of his text, consisting of a giant flamingo holding the artist in its beak; on the second page, Church drew a tearful cherub offering a flower to a bird in a tree with the handwritten caption, “Will you forgive one?” Happily, Church wrote the letter on the outer panels of the conjoined sheet so that both pages can be displayed at the same time without separation. In fine condition, with a shade of even, very mild toning and a few minor scattered spots. R&R COA.
