Description

A childless scientist makes a puzzling “corporal” reference: “3 1/2 hours sleep last night. This sounds like the boy should be spanked and put to bed”

Self-educated black scientist who became a recognized expert on botany, most notably relating to the cultivation and practical uses of the peanut. ALS signed “Geo. W. Carver,” one page both sides, 8.5 x 7.5, Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead, January 14, 1925. Washington writes to Mr. Hyne on recent activities and upcoming plans. In part: “Applications are simply pouring in from almost every quarter. The financial side shows a wonderful spirit, but it is through you I am sure that they are being worked up to that pitch. You must not say so much as you will be disappointed, the audience also. What a strenuous programme you have mapped out for me.” As Carver was unmarried and had no children, the “spanking” reference in the headline is evidently a bit of wry humor directed at himself. Accompanied by a vintage book photo. In fine condition, with usual mailing folds (one through signature), mild toning and soiling, and a few tiny spots. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
