Description

Ferdinand and Isabella sign together seven years after footing the bill for the epochal first journey of Christopher Columbus

Spanish monarchs best known as the sponsors and patrons of Christopher Columbus. DS, in Spanish, signed “Yo el Rey (I the King) and “Yo el Reyna” (I the Queen), three pages on two sheets plus outer wrappers, 9.25 x 12.75, May 22, 1499. A deed on vellum, written in a calligraphic secretarial hand and issued to Francisco Ramires of Madrid, Royal Secretary and Secretary to the Royal Council, and his wife, Beatrice Galindo, granting them the right to found an estate that may be passed on by inheritance. At the time this document was signed, Christopher Columbus was on the island of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic) in the course of his third journey to the New World. The document has also been countersigned by a number of other officials. Housed in a custom-made cloth folder and a deluxe gilt-stamped red morocco slipcase. From the estate of renowned collector Marshall B. Coyne. In very good condition, with creases, scattered toning and soiling (some toning touching Isabella’s signature), and staining (affecting mainly outer wrappers and lower portion of signed page, away from Ferdinand and Isabella’s signatures). COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
