Description

Very rare signature of the “Star of Africa”

Considered to be the most talented pilot in the Luftwaffe. He achieved seven victories in the Battle of Britain, but in turn was shot down four times. In 1941, he was sent to Africa, and soon developed his shooting ability and fearless flying, acquired the nickname “Star of Africa.” With a reputation of being a rebel to military discipline and a ladies’ man, plus his military exploits, he became a national hero to the German people. On September 1, 1942 he shot down 17 British fighters on three missions, 8 aircraft in 10 minutes. Many times he had multiple victories, eventually to become the most successful Luftwaffe pilot against Western opponents. Killed over El Alamein while attempting to bail out of his airplane. Very rare vintage fountain pen signature on an off-white 6.5 x 9.75 card, adding “Oberleutnant und Staffelkapitän” under his signature. A neatly trimmed portrait of Marseille has been affixed above signature, but may be matted out if so desired. In fine condition. R&R COA.
