TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, August 20, 1984. A lengthy letter to a gentleman regarding his Army experience during WWII. In part: “I was with the Red Ball Express from its inception. I was a Tank Destroyer officer who had been on detached service…The Red Ball was a hot-shot outfit developed to keep Patton’s 3rd Army supplied with gas. Once I had to go ahead and take care of four snipers before my convoy could go thru the woods. They would have been sitting ducks so I went ahead and took care of the situation…(This is for your information; there’s no record of what I did except in the memory of one chaplain and some of the boys). This is for your information only. Nothing need be said about it. The boys of the Red Ball deserve more credit than they ever got…Combat soldiers get the attention but without those boys it could not have been done. I was just one of the officers. They were a gutsy lot.” In fine condition. R&R COA.
