The first photo of Stuff Smith we’ve offered, and signed in 1936 - - his breakthrough year

Jazz violinist who is considered one of jazz music's preeminent violinists of the swing era. His first recordings were in the 1920s but it was not until 1936 that he had his breakthrough. Leading a quintet at the Onyx Club with trumpeter Jonah Jones, the group was a huge hit on 52nd Street for several years. He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1994. Vintage sepia glossy 7.75 x 10 photo of Smith in a checked jacket and top hat, playing a violin, signed “Sincerely Yours, ‘Stuff’ Smith, The Onyx, N.Y. ‘36” in fountain pen. A terrific image! In very good condition with a trimmed right edge, scattered soiling and surface impressions, light corner wear, a small green ink stain, adhesive residue on reverse. R&R COA.
