Liberal-leaning Supreme Court Justice known for his independence and strong advocacy of First-Amendment rights; at thirty-six years (1939–1975), the length of his tenure remains unmatched in American history. ALS, signed “W.O.D.,” one page, 5.5 x 8.25, February 19, no year [postmarked 1960]. A rather startling letter, written while Douglas sat on the high court, to Paul Doherty, his friend and an official in the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. In full: “Here are a few quickies: 1. New definition of rape: Assault with a friendly weapon. 2. The nurse who was so dumb she though Peter Pan was a wash basin. 3. The three most extravagant statements ever uttered: A) I’m glad I am a Jew; B) I’m glad I am not rich; C) I promise not to put it all the way in.” Very possibly an important primary source for a radically revised biography of this “distinguished” jurist! Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In fine condition, with usual mailing folds. R&R COA.
