Lot of ten TLSs, each signed “Joan,” 1959–1974. A collection of correspondence to Alan Brock and one other recipient, mainly friendly and seasonal greetings, thank-yous for cards and gifts, and the like. In the earliest letter, dated April 27, 1959, Crawford sends thanks for condolences following the death of her husband, Pepsi magnate Alfred Steele, on April 19. In full: “Thank you so much for your dear, sweet message. It means more to me than you’ll ever know. I’m so deeply grateful, and I know that Alfred would be grateful too for the comfort that your friendship brings me when I need it so desperately.” Other highlights: “Loved the inscriptions from the autograph book of the early ’90s. How simple and sweet were the sentiments expressed in those days”; “I’m so pleased that you liked my performance in The Virginian. I have never said that I do not want ever to act on the stage. I think it would be a wonderful experience—and am looking for the right play and right occasion—it will all come along sometime”; and “Thank you too for the clipping about Harry Langdon and me. It’s very interesting.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes. In fine condition, with usual mailing folds, a few minor wrinkles, and mild toning. R&R COA.
