Fantastic war-dated ALS, one page, 8 x 10, July 26, 1898. A revealing letter sent from the flagship Brooklyn in Guantanamo Bay. In part: “Thank you for your note of congratulation. I am afraid I am being praised more than I deserve for a simple act of duty to which my whole training in life has been directed. The victory was won by all who were engaged, and the people’s thanks are more due to them than to me, and I feel that I could not appropriate to myself what out to be shared with all.” Accompanied by an 1898 newspaper clipping explaining the origin of the letter, including a complete transcript. A top-notch letter with top-notch period documentation! In fine condition, with toning, usual folds (one through signature), and a touch of mild soiling. R&R COA.
