Bank problems for the nation’s first Attorney General

Appointed United States Attorney General by George Washington, served from 1795 - 1801. He was the brother of General Henry "Lighthorse" Lee. ALS, one page, 6.75 x 7.25, Alexandria, October 12, 1798. In part: “It was to me unexpected to find my [?] for one thousand dollars…on the first of the month, as I left in bank about five hundred dollars, and had appointed the bank to retain an attorney for me…enclosed two hundred fifty which please to place to my credit. This sum I believe will discharge all but will be due from me…” In very good condition, with show through from adhesive residue and sealing wax affecting only one letter of signature and one word of text, several folds, one through letter of signature.
