Description

Could be a heck of night with Degas, “If your wife doesn’t come with you, she will be delivering you into the hands of temptation”

French impressionist painter of women bathing and horses racing. A rare and spectacular collection of eleven letters includes what is possibly the last letter written by Degas prior to his death. ALS in French, signed “Degas,” two pages, 4 x 6.25, no date. Translated, in part: “He told me it would be better if I wrote you - so, next Thursday, June 15, there will be a small buffet party at 21 Rue Pigalle, 3rd floor; the loveliest apartment in the whole neighborhood…if your wife doesn’t come with you, she will be delivering you into the hands of temptation…In any case, I’ll see you Tuesday when I go over for dinner…Degas.” Degas never made it to the gathering as he died shortly after writing this letter. Also included is correspondence from Edmond Degas (his nephew), informing Mr. Bartholome of Degas’ death. The letter reads, in part: “It is with deep sorrow that, in the absence of my father, I am the conveyor of a tragic message. I know what fraternal friendship united you to my poor uncle, who died in his sleep at midnight last night…Edmond Degas.” The other nine letters consist of condolences sent by many friends and admirers of the artist. Each letter is accompanied by a complete translation. In fine condition. COA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
