Cullen quotes The Battlefield, “But Error, wounded, writhes in pain, And dies among his worshippers.”

Regarded at the time as the finest poet in the United States, abandoned poetry to become a leading advocate of abolition. Editor of the Evening Post and a founder of the Republican Party and in 1860 introduced Abraham Lincoln to the audience at Cooper Union. AQS on a 5 x 5.5 off-white sheet, Bryant writes a stanza from The Battlefield. In full, “Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again; The eternal years of God are her’s; But Error, wounded, writhes in pain, And dies among his worshippers. William Cullen Bryant, Nassua, Feb. 11, 1872.” Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Bryant, to an overall size of 14.25 x 9.25.
