Long before joining the Supreme Court, Taney uses his stroke, “Mr. Charles Walsh… has been for some time on the list of appointments for a midshipman’s warrant. The object of this letter is to apprise you that he still desires to be regarded as an appointment.”

Chief justice of the US Supreme Court; he handed down the Dred Scott Decision and upheld federal supremacy over state authorities. ALS signed “R. B. Taney,” one page, 7.75 x 10, April 3, 1829. Taney writes to an unknown recipient regarding a young man’s military appointment. In part, “Mr. Charles Walsh…who I understand is now about sixteen years of age, has been for some time on the list of appointments for a midshipman’s warrant. The object of this letter is to apprise you that he still desires to be regarded as an appointment…Mr. Wyatt…speaks of Mr. Walsh in very favorable terms & I therefore respectfully recommend him to your consideration.” In very good condition, with a light shade of overall toning, previous folds and wrinkles, light show through from adhesive on reverse and a few small edge tears.
