Description

Unsigned handwritten poem, one page, both sides, on a 4.5 x 7.5 lined off-white sheet, originally taken from Sutcliffe’s poetry notebook. Front of sheet bears a four stanza poem entitled Lament of the Wicked and begins “This land of strife and woe, With all the evils God can bestow, Upon the sinner and all our heather band, Of cuthroats, crooks and thieves.” Reverse bears two more lines, although it is unknown if it is for the same poem. Accompanied by a letter of provenance stating that the poetry book was originally property of the Sutcliffe estate until sold at a Bonhams auction in July 2003. In fine condition, with light toning. COA Roger Epperson/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
