Description

As governor of New York (1817–1823 and 1825–1828) was a principal supporter of the Erie Canal. ALS, one page, 8 x 9.75, Lewistown letterhead, May 24, 1829. A letter to General Van Rensselaer. In part: “…the board of canal commissioners desirous of obtaining correct information…collecting tolls and preventing frauds…Have appointed Col. Mornay Johnson who is desirous of obtaining letters of introduction to the collectors….” In very good condition, with typical age and handling wear, edge toning, vertical folds (two through signature).
