Description

Ten years before the repeal of apartheid laws in South Africa, Thatcher empathizes with a citizen’s strong feelings and writes “I believe that the Government must continue on its present course whilst continuing to watch developments in South Africa.”

TLS signed “Yours sincerely, Margaret Thatcher,” two pages, 8.25 x 11.75, 10 Downing Street letterhead, April 19, 1982. In part: “Thank you for your letter about the unofficial tour of South Africa by a party of English cricketers…The Government’s attitude towards this tour rests on…‘the Gleneagles Agreement.’ Commonwealth heads of government in 1977 agreed to demonstrate their opposition to apartheid. We share this abhorrence of apartheid and are determined to promote multi-racial sport within the Commonwealth and elsewhere…I reaffirmed our commitment …which require us to do what we can to discourage sporting contacts with South Africa. Our laws do not include any powers to ban such links (and rightly so), and we have sought to fulfill this obligation by offering advice and seeking to persuade. I realize that some people share your doubts about our commitment to the Gleneagles Agreement and I understand your strong feelings…I believe that the Government must continue on its present course whilst continuing to watch developments in South Africa.” In fine condition, with a couple of punch holes to left edge, one letter fold touching a couple of letters of the signature, a couple of areas of trivial soiling and a corner crease. R&R COA.
