Description

Edward politely declines invitations, explaining “...Were I not still inflicted with this hideous ‘shingles.’ “

Eldest son of George V and Queen Mary, Edward chose to renounce the throne he held for less than a year in order to marry “the woman I love.” TLS signed “Edward,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, June 21, 1958. In part: “The Duchess and I are very glad to have the invitation cards to the interesting and pleasant occasions which should have been were I not still inflicted with this hideous ‘shingles.’ I hope some special blue light X ray treatment I have heard of in Lausanne will hasten my recovery…The question of a visit to you later on must depend upon how long I take to get well.” In very good condition, with scattered light creasing, punch hole to upper left corner, a few areas of trivial soiling, ink notation is in another hand, small stain or spill affecting one letter in the signature. R&R COA.
