Realizing the importance of filling the ranks, Carleton appoints a militia captain, just one week after the British suffer heavy losses at Bunker Hill

First baron Dorchester, governor of Quebec, and British commander-in-chief in Canada. DS, in French, one page, 8.5 x 12.25, June 24, 1775. Just seven days after the Battle of Bunker Hill, Carleton presses to fill the military ranks. In part, “As it is necessary for the service of the King…to create militia companies in the various parishes of this Province…do hereby name and establish said Mr. Jean Bte. Belaire as captain of a militia company. Boldly signed at the conclusion, next to the paper seal, by Carleton.
