Description

Orville Wright check made out to Wright mechanic James Jacobs

Personal check, 7.75 x 3.25, filled out and signed by Wright, payable to James Jacobs for $30.00, January 27, 1917. The well-known antagonism over the Smithsonian's refusal to give credit for the first flight to the Wrights led Orville to agree to send the Flyer (1903) to England to be exhibited at the Science Museum in London. Of note, the original Wright flyer was, again, recovered with new fabric, and Wright mechanic James Jacobs did the woodwork on the project. In fine condition, with usual cancellation holes and stamps, with holes grazing a few letters of the signature, two vertical folds, one through a letter of the signature and an unobtrusive bank notation in blue pencil. R&R COA.
