Description

Portrait signed by Chase and the photographer Stax

One of movie comedy's “unsung heroes,” he began his career with Mack Sennett and can be seen in the Charlie Chaplin films The Knockouts, The Masquerader and Dough and Dynamite. He also worked behind the camera with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Ford Sterling, then worked alone with Wallace Beery and Gloria Swanson. He costarred with Laurel and Hardy in Sons of the Desert (1933). At Columbia Pictures, he starred in a series of funny two-reelers and directed other comedy stars such as Andy Clyde and The Three Stooges. One of his best starring comedies, The Heckler (1940) was also one of his last. He died at the age of 46 reportedly from alcoholism. Vintage sepia matte-finish 10 x 13 portrait by Stax, (who has also signed the lower right corner in pencil), signed and inscribed in fountain pen “To Another Charles - Capt. Mullins, from The Original Charley.” In fine condition, with neatly trimmed edges (slightly affecting the photographer’s signature), small separation to right border, couple of trivial dings. R&R COA.
