Description

Original Matisse sketch

Extremely rare and unusual abstract pencil drawing by Matisse. The drawing represents a robed female figure utilizing fluid parallel line composition. This unusual drawing is undated but circa 1948 and is presented on an off-white 9 x 13 vintage heavy art paper and signed with the Artist’s initials. During the years after his abdominal surgery in 1941, Matisse was unable to stand upright in front of an easel and, therefore, turned to other forms of artistic expression including paper cutout works and line drawings such as this one, through the date of his death on November 3, 1954. Pablo Picasso once said about the artist: “All things considered, there is only Matisse.” This drawing is from the collection of art book publisher Otto Solomon. In fine condition. R&R COA.
