Damage control for FDR, “As you have probably seen in the papers, Mr. Roosevelt’s illness turned out to be an attack of infantile paralysis which fortunately is very mild and from which doctors assure him he will suffer no permanent effects.”

Journalist and political adviser. Howe befriended New York state senator Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1911 and became his political mentor, serving as personal secretary and strategist. He persuaded FDR to remain in politics after he was stricken with polio and managed his successful gubernatorial and presidential campaigns.
