Description

Builder of Belmont Park Offers Advice on Horseback Riding

Influential New York businessman. Multimillionaire, socialite, and horse racer - built New York’s Belmont Park. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, September 26, 1922. In response to a letter from Rutherford Towner seeking a saddle horse, Belmont writes, in part: “…I am sorry to say I cannot give you the slightest assistance in your endeavor to procure a saddle horse, but from my own experience in days gone by, unless you are an exceptionally good horseman, and even then I would be very careful in using a horse that has been raced, to ride in the park. Riders are in the habit of indulging in short gallops on the bridle path, and a horse which has been raced would be very much stirred up by two or three horses dashing by him in this way.” Accompanied by the Towner letter seeking the horse. In fine condition, with slight edge toning and the usual letter folds. R&R COA.
