Description

While still grieving the loss of his first wife, Roosevelt characteristically takes time to console his friend John Sherman on his unsuccessful attempt to secure the Republican nomination: “You should have received the most cordial and hearty supports from all Republicans, and I should have been proud indeed could I have assisted in bringing about your nomination.”

ALS, two pages , 4.5 x 7, black bordered stationery, July 12, 1884. Letter to politician John Sherman. In full, “Your kind favor of the 16th inst has come to hand. I have only to regret that my efforts to transfer the various ‘dark horse’ and ‘favorite son’ votes to yourself were not successful; you should have received the most cordial and hearty supports from all Republicans, and I should have been proud indeed could I have assisted in bringing about your nomination.” A bit of mild soiling, blue ink stain along edge of second page, mounting remnants to reverse of second page, and several bisecting mailing folds, otherwise fine condition.
