Description

A scandal-ridden politician holds on for his political life: “Friends had informed me that the public opinion of the Rep. of Del. was in favor of the old ticket, I had heard that a strong effort was being made to instruct in favor of a change as to V. P.”

Grant’s vice president whose political career was ruined by his involvement in the Credit Mobilier and other scandals. ALS, one lightly-lined page, 4.75 x 8, Vice-President’s Chamber letterhead, May 9, 1872. Letter to an unidentified associate. In part, “I received your telegram…last evening, on my return from a prolonged session of the Senate. It was an agreeable surprise, for although friends had informed me that the public opinion of the Rep. of Del. was in favor of the old ticket, I had heard that a strong effort was being made to instruct in favor of a change as to V[ice] P[resident].” Colfax’s association in 1872 with the Liberal Republican Party, which opposed Grant, kept him out of the vice presidency during Grant's second term. In very good condition, with block of toning to middle of page, lightly affecting signature and portions of text and two horizontal mailing folds. R&R COA.
